Garden Grow Tips
Contents
Kale is the best! If you like a low maintenance veggie with tons of cold-hardiness, look no further; Ornamental Kale is just what your garden (and your taste buds!) is looking for.
Grow Zone: Flowering Kale does well in any grow zone 2-11. It doesn’t matter what area of the country you live in; Kale will do incredible!
Water and Sun Needs: Partial to areas of full sun. Never let the soil dry out, as Flowering Kale is NOT known to be drought resistant. Keep your plants well watered.
Average Size: 1 to 3 feet tall, 12 to 18 inches wide.
Plant Type: Annual
Special Features: Flowering Kale (and Kale of any variety, actually) are known for being extremely low maintenance. In most grow zones, you can even harvest them mid-winter for garden fresh veggies whenever. Additionally, Flowering Kale does wonderful in large containers!
How to Get Started: To get started on your winter garden, you can either propagate your seeds indoors (you will have to start the seeds so they are ready to go in-ground by mid August) or you can purchase Kale plants directly from a local nursery. I always get mine from Garden Hills Nursery and they have yet to disappoint! When sowing in-garden, it’s best to space plants out about 20-25 inches. Keep soil well drained, and slightly acidic!
When to Harvest: Harvest Kale leaves when they are about 10 inches long. If you choose to harvest shorter leaves, you may notice a duller taste. And always pick the bottom leaves first!
What to Plant It With: Liven up your cool season garden with these other plants; Leadworth, Crysthathemum, or Pansies.
