Drought Tolerant Designs: Australian Garden Landscaping

January 15, 2020 by Jenny Leave a Comment

Australia is an absolutely beautiful country and you’d never guess that pretty much everything grown in the area has to be drought tolerant. It doesn’t rain too often in the Outback. If you live in a drought susceptible area of the country, try one of these Australian garden landscaping ideas. They require little to no water, making them some of the easiest plants to care for.
Australia knows a little bit about droughts and how to landscape in that environment. So, we wanted to show you some ideas to get you started should you choose to landscape using this method. If you care about water conservation, this style is a great option. Keep on reading to learn about drought tolerant plants, grasses and Kangaroo paw. #drougtolerantlandscape #landscapeideas #waterconservation
Australian Garden Landscaping Drought Tolerant Design Ideas
One of my favorite parts about landscaping is putting together some sort of beautiful landscape design. Just because these plants are drought tolerant doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful! When planning your own garden design, don’t be afraid to mix tall grasses with gravel or river rock. The pair make for a lovely juxtaposition and the tall prairie-like grasses don’t need much additional care at all. Stay far away from grass! It requires far too much water to survive in a drought-tolerant environment. Instead, switch things up with gravel, bark, and even sand for a really cool look.

These are my favorite plants to landscape with.
Australian Garden Landscape: Kangaroo Paw
These dainty, red flowers look like they must need a whole lot of water to survive but it is actually quite the opposite. Plant in an area of your yard that gets tons of sunlight and make sure the soil is well-draining.

Australian Garden Landscape: The Christmas Bush
Only plant this gorgeous plant in an area that will support it’s grown, as this baby can get up to four feet tall. Seriously! The plant gets its name because it blooms around the holiday season if you live in an area of the country that is warm enough. I used to see these plants all over the place in New Mexico. The beautiful flowers brighten up any yard when needed in the wintertime.

Australian Garden Landscape Grass
There are MANY varieties of native grass that can be planted in drought-tolerant environments. My favorite is the Blue Fescue grass. It has a really edgy color that looks great paired with the Kangaroo Paw. Another personal favorite of mine is the Silvergrass. Silvergrass puts on a showing during the autumn months, with grass that turns an autumn shade.
