Fall Window Box Decorating Ideas Everyone Will Fall For

I love to decorate for Fall. All of the bright, colorful flowers and leaves make it easy to liven up any outdoor space. Around the beginning of September, I swap out the foliage in my window boxes for something a little more fall-friendly, instead. Here’s how to decorate a window box for Fall.

My Favorite Fall Window Box Planters

My favorite window box planters for fall (or any time of the year, really) are these ones from Pamela Crawford. They’re incredible!

From The Garden
I would have never considered putting squash from my garden into a window box, but it looks absolutely amazing here! Line your window box with hay or straw and then fill it with different varieties of fall squash from your garden. You could even incorporate fall flowers into your boxes like the DIYer did below. Just as long as you stick to a general color scheme, just about anything looks good.

Live Mums
Every time I see Mums in the beautiful dark red color below, I can’t help but think of the Fall. Fill your window boxes with live, tall mums all in the same color. Decide if you want to use cut flowers (these will have a drastically shorter shelf life) or if you want to grow your own. Plant seeds early in the year if you want to plant your own. Otherwise, head to your local nursery for a few baskets and then trim as needed. Look at how stunning this red contrast looks paired with everything else in the photo! This window box arrangement definitely screams fall and I can’t get enough of it.

Large Leafed Foliage
I love how the gardener below took large-leafed foliage and made it look like it was cascading down this window box. For a similar look in your own home, I recommend using fall-foliage like ornamental kale or cabbage (you can eat it and it looks BEAUTIFUL), purple fountain grasses, and even a sweet potato vine! It’s totally up to you, just pick plants that are a bit more tolerant of cooler temperatures and shorter days. Check out this list for more great fall foliage or flowers.

A Little Of Everything
If you can’t decide which vibe you’d like to go with for your fall window boxes, why not try a little bit of everything? This gardener incorporated their favorite grasses, flowers, and even squash or two to create the BEST fall window box anyone in your neighborhood has ever seen. I’m loving this and think that I’m going to do something similar.
