I’m not going to lie, not even for a moment. Vegetable gardening is not for the faint of heart. Unless you’ve personally been there, I can’t explain the sadness of losing a sick plant to bugs, pests, or worse: overwatering. That’s why when things aren’t growing in my veggie garden, I retreat to my flower beds instead. While they have their fair share of problems, I find that they are easier to diagnose on flowers. Regardless of your skill level, I invite you to set aside a corner of your yard for just flowers. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a novice, these are some of the easiest flowers to grow. Let’s get started flower gardening for beginners!
Gardening For Beginners: Easiest Flowers To Grow
Sunflower
It comes as no surprise that the common sunflower is super easy to grow, seeing as they sprout up by themselves in the fields behind my house all the time! Sunflowers should be spaced about 6 inches apart, in well-draining soil in an area of your yard that receives full sun. Water daily until sprouts appear and then only when it does not receive 2 inches of rainfall naturally.
Sweet Pea
This flower is as easy to grow as it is completely beautiful. Sweet Pea flowers prefer cooler climates, so make sure you get them in the ground and blooming before the heat of Summer truly sets in. Plant them just after the last frost in early Spring for beautiful blooms that stick around all Summer. Provide them with partial sun and a trellis to grow on, as well.
Zinnia
I love Zinnia’s purely because they’re just such a dramatic flower. Seriously, just take a look at these babies below: they’re BRIGHT. Plant in late April in an area of your yard that gets full sun. This will be essential to the health of your flowers as the season progresses. Water when the first inch of soil feels dry, these flowers do not respond well to drought. Zinnia flowers can be grown in zones 3-10.
Pansy
There’s nothing “pansy” about this mega-hardy flower. Check out this article, written by yours truly on the art of growing the Pansy, and honestly, it isn’t a hard “art” to pick up at all! Pansies are one of the easiest flowers to grow!
Lavender
Lavender plants are one of the hardiest flowers out there. Really! They’re incredibly drought resistant (or so they tell me, I’ve killed everyone I’ve ever owned) and can grow in pretty much any conditions, just provided it is in full sun. I have read that it is best to Lavender seeds 1-3 feet apart (seriously these babies can grow) in late Spring. Deadhead your blooms in the fall, and give them nice mulching to keep roots warm in the winter.
