Average Size: 6 inches to 8 inches tall, 6 inches to 2 feet wide.
Plant Type: Columbine is a perennial.
Special Features: Columbine flowers often reseed themselves. They also attract deer, and make lovely cut flowers. Additionally, you can grow Columbine flowers in containers and they are known to do exceptionally well.
How to Get Started: Plant your flowers in a soil that is well draining and not too dry. Make sure that it doesn’t get too hot in your grow zone during the summer, or your Columbines may die off. If you are living in a hotter climate, make sure to plant your flowers in partial shade. Mulch will also help with water retention if it’s an issue in your garden.
When to Harvest: Cut stems when they begin to bloom for a great vase filler. Also, if you would like to encourage new blooms throughout the season, it’s important that you deadhead your plants. Divide the plants every few years.
What to Plant It With: Phlox and other colorful flowers are know for a beautiful pairing with Columbine flowers. Toad Lily’s are also another great pairing. Columbines come in a variety of colors, and your options are truly endless. However, gardeners should keep the focus on their Columbines, and use other flowers as edging or borders.
