Begin growing chives with this simple guide! This herb is gorgeous and oh-so-tasty. I’ve had chives in my garden for years, and I’ve learned a thing to do with chive plant care. Grow chives with my guide!
Grow Zone: Perfect for grow zones 3-10.
Water and Sun Needs: Plant in areas of partial to full sun. Keep the soil moist.
Average Size: 6 inches to 3 feet tall, 8-12 inches wide.
Plant Type: Herb, perennial
Special Features: Good for containers, edible, low maintenance.
How to Get Started: If sowing from seed, start indoors 8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant as soon as your soil is easily workable. Choose an area of your garden with full sunlight and moist, well-draining soil. Place plants 4-6 inches apart, and keep soil regularly moist. Test with fingers to determine if a watering is needed.
When to Harvest: Harvest your chives about 60 days after you sow the seeds. From then, cut plants bac monthly because they do grow extremely rapidly! Use a pair of kitchen shears to harvest your chives when needed. Toss them in one of your favorite recipes.
