Garden Grow Tips

CAUTION! Gardeners should be warned before inserting this into your landscaping. Barberry is considered invasive in many grow environments. Check your local plant agency to see if it’s safe to begin growing barberry!

Grow Zone: Shrubs love that sweet spot between grow zones 3-9.

Water and Sun Needs: Does best in areas of partial to full sun. Shrubs should be watered weekly if rainfall doesn’t occur.

Average Size: 3-8 feet tall and up to 7 feet tall.

Plant Type: Shrub

Special Features:  Birds love the berries from the shrub. They’re also a low-maintenance option for forgetful gardeners.

How to Get Started: Barberry does well in almost any area of the yard equipped with ample sunlight and well-draining soil. Some gardeners have even found success growing them in containers. Water heavily until the shrub has established itself, and then water once weekly. Barberry shrubs will have to be pruned at least once yearly; once in the winter, and again a few months later. I reccommend adding a layer of mulch when planting!

When to Harvest: While the Barberry doesn’t produce an edible harvest, it produces a beautiful once! Expect berries to appear in late winter. This is the shrub perfect for Christmas colors!

What to Plant It With: Colorful combinations include: Daylily and varieties of ornamental grasses such as the “Prairie Fire.”
