As a low maintenance and easy-to-grow vegetable, growing Asparagus is a great option for many gardeners. This plant is a great (and delicious) perennial, so expect it to come around every year! Here’s how to start growing asparagus.

Grow Zone:Thrives in zones 4-9.

Water and Sun Needs: Plant in an area of the garden that receives full sunlight. Water only in times of extreme drought.

Average Size: 6 inches to 8 feet tall. 1 to 3 feet wide.

Plant Type: Vegetable/ Perennial

Special Features: A low maintenance and delicious veggie. This can grow in almost any condition, with a low amount of care!

How to Get Started: Plant in early Spring, and give your seeds a hearty feeding with a nitrogen-free fertilizer. Asparagus is a perennial, so it will reach full yield in 1-2 years. Plant in an area of full sun, but make sure you keep it away from garlic, onions, and potatoes; it’s been proven that these do no make great companion plants.

When to Harvest: If you started your plant from seed, you may not get a productive harvest for the next three years. As soon as your plants are established, it usually takes about 6 weeks for them to reach harvest maturity. Asparagus plants shouldn’t be thiner than a pencil.

What to Plant It With: Plant asparagus with tomatoes, parsley, and basil for the best options in companion gardening.
