Garden Grow Tips

If you aren’t growing agave, you definitely should be! Once you plant an Agave, it requires little further care. Heat and drought tolerant, this long-lasting plant could be a great front garden idea. Here’s how to start growing agave today!

Grow Zone: Grow in zones 5-11.

Water and Sun Needs: Plant agave in areas of partial to full sun. Water once weekly in the summer months.

Average Size: 1 to 20 feet tall, 1 to 10 feet wide.

Plant Type: Perennial

Special Features: This is a low maintenance plant that does exceptionally well in containers! Additionally, leaves do not brown or droop. It stays green all year long.

How to Get Started: Agave leaves have sharp points, so make sure this plant is in an area where no one will get hurt. For rapid growth, propagate your plant from a parent offset. This plant loves rocky or sandy soil, and actually thrives when neglected. Once established, some plants only need to be watered twice weekly! Do not fertilize Agave. It is unneeded.

When to Harvest: Unfortunately it takes as long as 6-8 years to harvest the sweet sap. Harvesting is a long process, so when you get to that point, here is a guide to help you harvest your sap.

What to Plant It With: For gorgeous garden combos, plant with Lavender, Yucca, and Pentsemon.
