How to Get Your Lawn Ready for Winter

December 21, 2017 by Jenny Leave a Comment

It might not seem super important to winterize your lawn..but proper care come your first cold snap is what will set your lawn up for success in the spring. Your lawn is about to be the talk of the neighborhood…

Look Into a Winter Fertilizer

Okay…do more than looking in to it! Pick out a winter fertilizer, and give your lawn a hearty helping at the first sign of frost. Winter Fertilizer is known for having tons of potassium which helps keep grass roots strong throughout the chill and wetness of winter. I recommend using this kind of Scott’s fertilizer.

Aerate Your Grass

Aerating your grass puts “holes” throughout your lawn that help the soil from getting too compacted during the winter. If soil is compacted and tight, water and nutrients will be unable to reach grass roots.

Reseed or Re-patch Come Fall

Did you notice a spot of dead grass that just would not green up no matter how hard you tried? Don’t hope that things will get better come spring; it may just be better to reseed your yard. Use the Fall months to repair any dead areas or holes.

Try Cool Season Over-Seeding

Springtime is great for grass….but also great for those weed seeds hiding out in your lawn. Over-seeding your lawn for Winter will help “drive out” competition weed seeds from taking over come Spring. Depending on your grow season, do this in early to late fall based on grow zone.

Don’t Forget About Your Lawn Mower

Don’t forget about your tools over the winter time! I mean, your lawn mower is what makes your lawn look great, right? Start by emptying your fuel tank, completely. After the fuel lines are disconnected, remove the blade for cleaning and sharpening. Replace the air filter and spark plug if necessary, and replace the engine’s oil. Doing this once yearly can keep your motor running for years to come.
