Just because winter is here doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking of spring! As far as I’m concerned, it’s never early enough to start planning ahead to Spring. I’m full of ideas for next Spring, but so far, the biggest to-do on my list is to add a few more hummingbird-friendly flowers throughout my garden! I love the elegance of hummingbirds and I could spend hours staring through my window at them. If you love hummingbirds, you can attract even more of them to your garden using by planting these 7 hummingbird friendly plants!

Daylily

Perfect for gardeners residing in grow zones 3-10 the Daylily is perfect for gardeners who want blooms all Summer long and perfect for hummingbirds! Daylilies do best when planted in areas of full sun in moist, well-draining soil. Expect them to grow between 10-inches and 4-feet tall!

Columbine

If you live in grow zones 3-9, the Columbine flower might be the perfect addition to your flower garden. Not only is it one of the most hummingbird-friendly plants but it can be grown in both areas of sun AND shade. When growing, plants should be spaced at least 1 foot apart and require relatively moist soil.

Penstemon

Another plant perfect for those of you residing in grow zones 3-9, the Penstemon is another gorgeous plant that does well in areas of full sun to partial shade. Though these plants aren’t too picky about sunlight, they do require conditions that are “just above” drought-worthy. Let the soil dry out between waterings for adequate plant health! I recommend planting these on your balcony or porch, anywhere that you can watch the hummingbirds go after these flowers!

Bee Balm

Bee Balm is one of my favorite hummingbird-friendly plants! I’ve made sure to include the plant in all of my own gardens and virtually any garden that I have designed. It is another plant perfect for planting in zones 3-9 and is available in a variety of colors. Grow the plant in an area that has full morning sun and plenty of afternoon shade.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus flowers aren’t just for those lucky enough to be living in Hawaii! If you live in grow zones 4-10, Hibiscus is one of the perfect hummingbird-friendly plants! Plant hibiscus seeds in an area of rich soil that receives at least 3-4 hours of direct sunlight every day. If cared for correctly, you can expect your hibiscus plant to grow up to fifteen feet tall! This stunner will make anyone believe they’re on vacation in the tropics! You can find my guide to growing hibiscus here.

Peony

This hummingbird-friendly plant does best when grown in zones 3-8. Known for blooming in late Spring or early Summer, the peonies are a sweet treat for hummingbirds and bees alike. When growing, make sure that you place your peony plants in an area of full sun. While they can tolerate the shade, extended periods of it may stunt the growth of your plant. Water regularly, and deadhead blooms at the end of the growing season. Check out my tutorial for growing peonies for more information!

Coral Bells

Like most of the plants on this list, coral bells is another hummingbird-friendly plant that does fantastic in growing zones 3-9! Coral bells are used to growing in heavily-wooded areas, so you can plant the flower in areas that receive indirect or filtered sunlight without any harm. Too much sunlight can actually be harmful to these plants, so make sure you choose an area of the garden that will sustain this kind of growth. Allow soil to dry out between waterings!
