I’m always looking to add a touch of the dramatic to my flower garden but it can be hard to find unique flowers that are low maintenance. Fortunately, I found all of those things and more in the Veronica flower! Veronica perennials are available in a variety of different colors and add the perfect contrast to any flower garden. These beautiful perennials are a gardener’s dream! And when I say “low maintenance,” I wasn’t kidding… the flowers survive on little water every week. My grandmother always swore by these flowers and I love to bring that same charm to my flower gardens!
Grow Zone: Veronica perennials grow best in zones 3-11. You can grow this beautiful flower virtually anywhere!
Water and Sun Needs: For optimal growth, it’s best to grow your Veronica plants in full sun. If plants do not receive an average of an inch of water per week, make sure that they are supplemented!
Average Size: You can expect your Veronica plants to reach anywhere from 6 inches to 3 feet tall and 8 inches to 2 feet wide.
Plant Type: Perennial
Special Features: Veronica plants make for absolutely stunning cut flowers, cut as soon as they bloom! Additionally, Veronica is deer resistant, drought tolerant, and is a great option for container gardeners.
How to Get Started: To start growing Veronica plants, it’s best to grow them in areas of full sun. The flowers should receive at least 8 to 10 hours of sun per day. If planted in areas of the yard that get fewer rays of sunshine, Veronica plants become extremely susceptible to diseases like Leaf Spot. Though you can grow this plant from seed, I recommend starting nursery bought transplants in early Spring instead. Plant after the last frost as soon as the soil is workable for healthy plants. Once planted, cover the base with an inch of compost and a layer or two of mulch to help with moisture retention. No further fertilizer is required throughout the remainder of the growing season.
When to Harvest: Unfortunately, there is not an edible harvest for these gorgeous plants but gardeners will get to enjoy an extended blooming period! Gardeners can enjoy Veronica blossoms in the spring, summer, and autumn months depending on the variety chosen.
What to Plant It With: For added color, tons of texture, and more interest in your garden, plant these perennials with Coreopsis, Salvia, and Lady’s Mantle.
