Landscaping around trees can really make a big impact to your yard.I like to use all of the available space when I’m tackling a landscaping project, especially if the yard was tiny to begin with! The area around growing trees is often disregarded when landscaping, but when done correctly can really maximize the effect of your yard.
When landscaping around trees, one should keep it simple and low maintenance. It’s also important to pick plants that won’t steal the water away from your trees. If you’re looking to maximize all of the available space in your yard, I challenge you to take advantage of the space around your trees with a tree border.
Landscaping Around Trees: Ideas
Give your garden more of an Italian feel with tree borders made from pristinely trimmed shrubs! I recommend growing boxwood shrubs like this around your trees. Of course, keep in mind the type of tree you have when planting bushes like this; you want something just as shapable so the landscape doesn’t look too crowded.
Here, the unique shape of the borders themselves is what steals the show. If you look closely, you can see small plants nestled along the borders themselves! If we came back in a year or two, this backyard will look completely different. Should you want to try a different look, you could fill the borders with a plant like Lamb’s Ear.
Landscaping Around Trees: DIY
Personally, this is my favorite idea featured! I can’t get enough of how each element in this space is working together to pull the whole thing off! When bringing this to life, space is an important factor to consider because you’ll need plenty of it! Start your project off by bordering your tree with flat rock or brick. After that, you can work inwards, adding layers of multi-colored wildflowers before finishing off with kept seed grass. This reminds me of a royal garden and is by far the brightest and most colorful method for landscaping around trees that’s featured in this article!
Draw attention to even the dullest corners of your yard with a bright, flowering tree border. This one is smaller than the others featured and it would work great in a yard with little room! A corner like this probably wouldn’t have been utilized prior to the tree landscaping because of its awkward sizing. Doesn’t it give the yard a great finishing touch? I think so!
Landscaping Around Trees: Stumps
Repurpose logs by cutting them up to create raised garden beds around the base of your trees. Fill with a soil enriched with compost (use my guide for more information on all things composting) and plant a mixture of shrubs or flowers in the raised beds. If you’d like, I’ve even seen people grow hardy vegetables like Kale in the spaces around their trees!
Landscaping Around Trees: With Rocks
Or, you can always choose to keep the plants away from your tree borders and decorate with colored rocks and bricks instead. I’ve always been told not to put mulch or soil around the base of your tree so that it actually builds up higher than the natural level of the tree going into the earth, or it could harm them. Are there trees that this guideline doesn’t include?
Planting directly under a mature tree should not take water or nutrients that would naturally feed the tree because the feeder roots of a mature tree usually reach to where the rain drips off the tree.
