Where I come from, watermelon is a summer staple. Our favorite melon makes an appearance during almost ALL of our summer barbecues, and in some cases, they’re even incorporated into our home decor! With all of the watermelon eating happening, it’s pretty easy for one to wonder how you can get the BEST tasting watermelon EVERY TIME. Here’s my foul-proof guide!
Whether you are picking them right from your garden, or out of the bins in your local produce section, first thing is first! You need to PICK UP the watermelon. Regardless of the size of the melon, it should feel “overly heavy” for it’s size. The heavier the melon, the more fruit you get to eat!
Next, you will want to look for the “yellow spot” on the underside of the melon. The yellow spot is where the melon rests as it grows, and the color of the yellow spot will help you determine if the melon is ripe enough. When the spot is a creamy yellow (see the picture below for reference!) it means that the melon is ripe enough to eat.
Before you bring that melon indoors (or into the checkout line) you will want to give it a nice “rap” with your knuckles. As you tap the underside of the watermelon, listen for a deep, hollow sound. This means that your melon is ripe enough to eat. If the melon sounds dull, it often means that it is overripe.
Now that you know how to get the best-tasting watermelon every time, you’ll have absolutely no problem pleasing your party guests.
Shake some salt on ’em and eat up! Watermelons will only be in season for a short while!
