It’s here! It’s here! The sunshine is finally here! It’s still a bit chilly in my neck of the woods but we’ve gotten more sun this week than we did in all of February! And you know what plenty of sunshine means: the gardening season will be here before you know it! Since it’s now March, get ready to start planting because seed sowing season is just about here. Let’s get started!
Plant Annual Flowers (By End of March)
Yep. The moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here! It’s time to start ACTUALLY digging into the soil and planting your flowers! If you live in a frost-free environment, you can start planting your annual flowers just as soon as the soil warms up. Feel free to plant wax begonia, zinnia, and angelonia in your garden just as soon as the weather permits. Keep a fleece blanket handy to cover your flowers just in case there is a sudden freeze.
Fertilize, Fertilize, Fertilize!
March is the perfect time to give your trees, shrubs, roses, and hedges a dose of slow-releasing fertilizer to start their growing season off on the right foot. Reapply fertilizer in September or October.
Start Veggies From Seed
Yep. It’s time to start growing vegetables! Isn’t that exciting? I feel like I look forward to this every year! If you plan to grow things like lettuce, spinach, radishes, peas, or squash, try your hand at starting them now! Plant seeds just as soon as the soil is workable.
Lay New Lawn (If Needed)
Did the mid-summer heat have your lawn looking a little less-than-desirable? Use the month of March to re-seed or re-sod the areas of your front lawn that need it the most. Do so just as soon as the ground has thawed and is somewhat workable!
Repot Houseplants (If Necessary)
I know that I haven’t given my houseplants much attention over the last eight months or so, but somehow they’re still hanging on! If you haven’t done so recently, use the month of March to repot any houseplants that may have grown out of their container. Make sure to replace the soil, too! Not only will this encourage new growth, but the new soil will do wonders for your plant. Trust me!
Divide Perennials
Hostas, Chrysanthemums, and Daylily should all be divided just as soon as the plant begins growing for Spring. It’s recommended that you replant the divisions as soon as possible to keep them healthy.
Wash Empty Containers and Flower Pots
Now is a good time to thoroughly wash out any containers or flower pots that may have housed plants last year. Regardless of how your plants died, it’s important to wash out the containers to prevent the spread of any potential disease. You’ll be glad you did it!
