June is one of my favorite months of the year because things really start to heat up in the garden. Both metaphorically and literally! The days are finally a little longer, giving plants plenty of time to grow and stretch out in the sun. You should begin to see your veggies begin to sprout up, and your flowers should be beginning to thrive. Keep your plants thriving and healthy as they continue to grow with these tips and tricks for gardening in June. Make sure that you add these to your gardening to do list for June ASAP!
A Monthly Guide To Gardening In June
Reapply Mulch and Water New Plants Regularly
Because things are starting to get hot in June, now is a good time to reapply mulch anywhere that needs it. Not only will the added mulch keep plants healthy in the hot months, but added mulch can prevent weeds as well. As for any new annual plants, keep them thoroughly watered throughout the month of June as they establish new roots. I typically check the soil every day, watering as I see fit based on the moisture of the soil. Doing these two things now will go a long way in keeping your annuals (and perennials) producing and healthy.
Fertilize With Compost
Head out to the garden sometime in mid June and mix a few inches of compost into the soil for some much-needed mid-season fertilizer. The added compost will act as a “pick-me-up” and keep plants healthy into the late growing season as they begin to produce fruit. Use these tips and tricks from yours truly to learn more about composting in your own garden. If you aren’t a composter, you can use regular fertilizer.
Keep Up With Tomato Plants
By this point, your tomato plants should be getting taller, with branches full of small blooms as they get ready to produce fruit. Now is a good time to begin staking your tomato plants, so the weight of their fruit doesn’t snap their stems as they grow. Now is also a good time to pinch out any “suckers” (any tomato offshoots from the main plant) so they don’t steal the nutrients from the main plant. Read more about pruning tomato plants here.
Clean Up Fallen Fruit and Veggies To Prevent Pests
Around mid-June is when plants begin to produce the first wave of fruit. Set aside sometime each week to clean up any fallen (or rotting) fruit from the tree branches and ground. You could even head out to your garden and do the same thing. Cleaning up any fallen fruits and veggies helps to prevent pests!
Clean Out Bird Baths
Starting in June (and throughout the remainder of the Summer) clean out your bird baths every few weeks so the birds have somewhere clean to retreat to. It’ll be so enjoyable watching the birds flock to the bath from your kitchen window!
