There’s nothing that screams Spring quite like a bouquet of Tulips! Fresh cut tulips make any space throughout your home instantly happier! The only problem is that cut tulips are notorious for only staying alive for a few days, here’s how you can maximize the life span of your fresh cut tulips!
If you want your tulips to last for a long period of time, it’s time to change how you shop for your flowers! It may be tempting to purchase a bouquet with large, open blooms, but these don’t last nearly as long! When choosing your bouquet, pick tulips with fully closed bulbs. Preferrably those with only a little color! Always bring them home from the shop tightly wrapped in damp paper towels.
Once you’ve arrived back at home, cut back the stems by 1/4 of an inch. Be sure to cut the stems at an angle, because this helps with water absorbtion. Be sure to remove any stems and unsightly leaves from the tulips before placing them in water.
When picking a vase for your tulips to reside in, pick one that is “taller.” Tulips are notorious for “sagging” when in a vase! Pick a vase that is tall enough for them to lean up against. It will keep them looking healthy much longer! Wash your vase thoroughly to prevent the spread of bacteria or plant-related fungal infections!
When it comes time to position your stems around the vase, do your best to ensure that they have a little room, while keeping them as upright as possible! This way, they won’t crush one another and cause the dreaded “petal droop.”
Keep the vase full of cold water, and even add a couple of pennies to the water in the vase to provide the tulips with the necessary vitamins. Keep your tulips out of the same vase as daffodils, they can cause premature color fading in tulips and other flowers.
