I love modern medicine…don’t get me wrong, but I’m a firm believer in the power of plants. If grown and consumed correctly, they can really have wonderful effects on your health! Whether it be to treat common skin ailments or an upset stomach or two, these are just a few healthy plants that you should always grow in your garden. In my world, a plant a day keeps the doctor away! Keep reading to find out which ones!
Lady Ferns
Commonly known for treating stinging nettle, Lady Ferns are wonderful at relieving stings, cuts, and burns! To use, twist the leaves between your hands to release healing juices from the plant. You should feel relief almost instantly! Typically, Lady Ferns grow best in areas of the country that receive tons of water so plan accordingly.
Aloe Vera
I’m sure you didn’t need me to tell you that Aloe Vera is one of the best healthy plants! Great for sunburns, heartburn relief, and even for lowering your blood sugar, Aloe is a must-grow. For all of these medicinal benefits, Aloe Vera is also pretty low-maintenance. Water once weekly and only when the soil feels dry. Aloe doesn’t need much sun and can grow even in shady corners.
Hyssop
Also known as Korean Mint, this healthy plant is great for calming an upset stomach, relieving headaches, and reducing the effects of fatigue. As part of the mint family, Hyssop does grow and spread quickly. Sow seeds in an area that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. I recommend growing Hyssop in a container to prevent excessive growth and cutting the leaves to chew on, brew in a tea, or smell. Fresh mint is wonderful!
Sage
Sage is essentially a “catch-all” healthy plant. Meaning that it has so many medicinal uses! Sage can be used to help with cramps, diarrhea, and phlegmy coughs. Additionally, Sage can be used in a salve to heal burns, cuts, and stings. Sage is easy to grow in a windowsill garden, and only needs a sunny window and a little water. Repot the plant when needed as it grows and only water when the soil feels dry.
Blackberries
Not only are Blackberries themselves filled with health-boosting antioxidants their roots are also full of health benefits. You can use their roots (used in teas, or blended and capsulated) as an anti-inflammatory, anti-astringent, and even can help treat against dysentery. Though full of benefits, blackberries aren’t known for being the most low maintenance as they need tons of sunlight. But if you can keep PH levels between 5.5-7 and water them an inch per week, you might get pretty lucky! Expect plants to start bearing fruit a year after planting.
Catnip
While great for cats, did you know that catnip is also great at relieving cold symptoms in humans? You bet it is. Catnip can also help fevers to break, helps with gas and bloating, and even migraines. Catnip is one of the best healthy plants!
