A good fence is important to any yard, privacy-wise. But the unfortunate reality is that it can be difficult to landscape along a fence! Fortunately, I have a few great ideas. Check out these awesome backyard landscaping ideas along fences to complete your space.
Backyard Landscaping Ideas Along Fence: Low Maintenance
Trees
For a low maintenance landscaping idea, plant a few trees along your fence line. Eventually, the trees will grow together, essentially creating a wall of privacy. My parents did this in their own yard when I was 8 years old, you should see how large they’ve gotten!
Mini Flower Beds
Create a small flower bed that runs the length of your fence. Once the bed has been installed, plant statement-bushes like peonies, hydrangeas, and other gorgeous flowers. Eventually, after a few years of growth, this will make for the perfect cutting garden AND privacy wall. There’s nothing prettier! All it needs is some watering, a pruning every season, and a little fertilizer twice a year.
Backyard Landscaping Along Fence: Simple
Shrubs
If you’re going for something simple, plant Boxwood shrubs down the line of your fence. They will require pruning every now and again, but it creates a really modern, sleek, and simple look.
Pathway
Install a small pathway (lined by gorgeous shrubs and flowers, of course) that runs the length of your fence. This is a perfect way to incorporate a pathway into a small yard if you’ve always been dreaming of one!
Backyard Landscaping Along Fence: Rock Border
Do you live in the desert? One of my favorite backyard landscaping ideas for deserts is to use gravel as an accent. Create a rock border along the length of your fence and plant things like Cacti, Yarrow, and Baptisia. Agave would even do wonderfully!
Backyard Landscaping Along Fence: Privacy Screens
Arbor
Create a small arbor that extends half a foot or so out from your fence line. Next, all you have to do is plant some trailing plants such as Sweet Potato Vine, Honeysuckle, or Trumpet Vine. If you’d rather stay away from flowering vines, any kind of Icy (except poison, of course) does well.
Trellis
A trellis, of course, is a great way to create privacy in your backyard. To make your own that will fit in the space around your fence line, check out this tutorial from Homestead and Chill.
Backyard Landscaping Along Fence: Corner
Sitting Area
Landscaping the corners of your yard is always tricky! But this is a good idea if you are stuck: turn the area into a place for seating! Break out the rock pavers to create a pathway and tuck a chair or bench back there. Add a tree for shade (if there’s room) and a few other plants for good measure.
Tiered Garden Bed
Using rocks, create a tiered garden bed along the corner of your fence. It’s a great way to grow vegetables if you didn’t have the room in another area of your garden. Learn how to install one on your own with this tutorial from Lowe’s.
