Container gardening is one of my favorite hobbies. It’s so fun to put together a gorgeous arrangement and watch it grow throughout the season! But if there’s one thing that I dislike about container gardening, it’s the fact that planters and containers can be SERIOUSLY expensive. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on planters for your container garden, make your own out of paint cans, instead. Saving money and reducing landfill waste? Yes, please! Here’s how to do it:
DIY Paint Can Containers That Are Popping With Color
Here’s what you’ll need:
-Old Paint Cans
-Paint In Your Desired Color
-Wine corks
-Hacksaw
-Paint Stir Stick (for plant marker…if desired)
Step One: Remove any labels from the face of the paint can. These will show up even after you paint over the can, so it’s best to remove the labels and clean the cans. After cleaning, wait for the container to fully dry before moving on.
Step Two: Apply your desired coat of paint to the paint can. You can paint the entire thing in one shade, or you can do it in a cool design like the ones below. It’s completely up to you. But as always, make sure it is fully dry before moving on.
Step Three: Cut your paint stir stick in half with your hacksaw. Paint the stick and let dry before labeling with a marker. This is great if you can never seem to remember what you planted where…I always run into this issue.
Step Four: Next, fill the bottom of the paint can with wine corks. This will provide drainage and keep your plants from dying of root rot. Then fill with soil, topping things off with the plant of your choice. Make sure to water plants thoroughly after transplanting like this! Easy enough, right? And they’re totally adorable. What could be better than this simple DIY paint can project?
