I truly love to garden! I love to eat the veggies I’ve grown, sitting around the table with my family looking at a vase full of the flowers I’ve helped to cultivate. And while I love basking the literal “fruits” and vegetables of my labor, one of my favorite parts of gardening is actually watching the birds, bees, and other small animals flock to my garden. It’s a blast to watch (and listen!) to all of this wildlife with a cup of coffee in the morning! There’s something about listening to the birds chirp that I just find so relaxing. Instead of chasing them away with bird spikes and other yard defenses, I invite you to welcome these creatures in. Not only are birds great for the garden, but they’re good for the soul, too. Keep reading to see why!
Why Gardening Is For The Birds
Power Pollinators
If there’s one reason I love birds, it’s because they’re powerful pollinators. Like bees, birds (especially hummingbirds) will use their needle-like beaks to spread pollen from one flower to another causing them to bloom bigger and brighter. And who doesn’t like beautiful blooms that leave an impact?
Weed Control
Did you know that sparrows and finches actually eat weed seeds? You read that correctly, birds in your garden will help you with your weed problem before it even begins. Plus, these weed seeds are full of nutrients for the birds, making it a win-win scenario for you both. Just be sure to keep an eye on your veggie seeds after sowing…
They Create Atmosphere
Birds in the garden create such a relaxing, magical atmosphere! It is easy to fall into a trance while watching them fly around, but their songs can actually help promote stress-relief and well-being. And if there’s one thing for sure, you’ll definitely feel like a Disney princess, especially if you can manage to chirp along!
Educational Opportunities
It’s never too early to talk to your kids about Earthology (the study of the Earth). And watching wildlife in your backyard is the perfect way to introduce the subject. Teach kids about the ecosystem around them, the food chain, and where common backyard creatures lie within those ecosystems. It’s fun to learn when it’s interactive and in your own backyard.
Pest Control
Pests are usually the downfall of ANY gardener! Fortunately, plenty of birds throughout the garden can actually help control your pest problem because they love to eat bugs! They’ll get a meal and you’ll have pest-free plants.
