One of my favorite months of the year is here! Though it’s too cold in my neck of the woods to start sowing soil, there are a few gardening chores I like to get out of the way for Spring. But even though the soil might be too cold to work with, there are still a few seeds you can start indoors to get ready for Spring. Here’s a list of things to do and grow in February! Starting this early will ensure that you have ample success all year long.
Prepare Your Seed Beds
Get ready for the planting season by warming up your ground for the upcoming planting season. Help your garden beds warm up for the summer by placing fleece, polythene, or cloches over top of the soil to keep snow off. You’ll appreciate this come March!
Organize The Seeds You Bought In January
Remember all of those seeds I had you stock up on back in January? Take some time to organize what you bought! I like to organize my seeds by sowing date, so I have everything ready when I begin planning. If you organize them this way, you’ll never forget to plant a vegetable again.
Kill Perennial Weeds
Get after them now, and you should see less of them come Spring. I’m serious, dig up your perennial weeds now (weeds and all) and kill them before they even have a chance of thriving. Catching them before temperatures warm up is CRUCIAL to fewer weeds later on.
Start Pruning
Prune Wisteria, Clematis, and fuschia plants back to just a few shoots on each plant. Now is also a good time to cut shrubs back to their bases, remove faded flowers from winter pansies, and winter flowering jasmine. This will encourage new growth all around.
Start Growing Potatoes
We eat a lot of potatoes in my house! They’re super easy to grow and they’re so versatile. To get ready for spring, I start growing my potatoes ASAP. To do so, I begin by chilting the potatoes in an ice cube tray. Since you’re encouraging sprouts, I recommend placing the chilting potatoes in an area that is both bright and cool. You can plant these as soon as the ground completely thaws.
Test Your Soil
If you haven’t already, February is one of the best times to test the PH of your soil. I recommend purchasing a soil testing kit (I find mine on Amazon) so you can better determine the care plan for your garden.
