One of the most well-known houseplants, Prayer Plant is an easy plant for beginners to start growing. Often times, Prayer Plant is recommended as the first plant beginners try their hand at growing and caring for. I’ve had a Prayer Plant in the corner of my bedroom for years and all I’ve had to do to keep it alive is remember to water it every now and again! I’m not kidding when I say that anyone can grow these plants in the home, so let’s get started!
Grow Zone
Can be grown anywhere indoors. Can grow in zones 11-12 outdoors.
Prayer Plants prefer partial sun and should be watered when the soil feels dry.
Average Size: Prayer Plant may grow to be 12-18 inches tall and 12-36 inches wide.
Plant Type: Perennial
Special Features:
As I previously mentioned, Prayer Plant is one of the easiest to grow. It does well as a potted plant, and can even do well in a hanging planter, as well.
How to Get Started
Have I convinced you that the Prayer Plant is just the houseplant you need? Great! To start growing, place your plant in an area of indirect sunlight, in a large pot full of well-draining soil. Too much sun can cause the leaves on your plant to scorch and it can be difficult for the plant to recover. Due to that, I recommend placing the Prayer Plant in an eastern or northern facing bedroom room of the home. Water only when the top 1/2 inch of soil feels dry and never let the plant sit in a puddle. Overwatering like this always causes root rot! These plants do like the humidity (and so does our skin!) so I run my personal humidifier every so often. Re-pot every few years to promote growth.
When to Harvest
There is no edible harvest or any blooming period for the Prayer Plant. However, some pruning is necessary. Therefore, Prune and trim off any dead foliage every few weeks or whenever you happen to think about it.
What to Plant It With
Finally, for stunning color in low-light areas of your home, pair the Prayer Plant with Fern or Begonia plants.
