If you are looking for an absolutely stunning groundcover plant, I recommend that you try working with Ajuga plant. Not only is it one of the most stunning ground covers that you can buy but it’s actually pretty tolerant, as well. Ajuga plant is outfitted with dark green and glossy leaves but come Spring and Summer it blossoms into stunning blue, pink or purple flowers. Let’s get started with Ajuga today!
Grow Zone
I recommend growing Ajuga plant in zones 4-10.
Water and Sun Needs: Ajuga plant does well in areas of partial shade to full sun. You could plant this virtually anywhere in your yard, just make sure that the soil stays moist (however, the plant is known to tolerate extended periods of drought!)
Average Size
Ajuga plants typically grow to be under 6 inches tall and a mere 6-18 inches wide.
Plant Type: Ajuga plant is a perennial.
Special Features
This is one of the most low maintenance ground covers that you can find!
How to Get Started
Ajuga plants are part of the mint family, so gardeners may have problems with overgrowth. To combat this, it is recommended that you grow them in raised garden beds. Plant Ajuga in an area of soil that is well-draining with a PH level from 3.7-6.5. They can be grown in areas of full sun or partial shade, but when grown in areas of full sun, flowers may be smaller than usual. Plant Ajuga in early spring, taking care to space each plant 12-15 inches apart to accommodate for the rapid growth. You’ll never want to work with another groundcover again!
When to Harvest
Gardeners should not expect to receive an edible harvest from this plant but can expect to see a stunning showing of flowers in late Spring or early Summer.
What to Plant It With
Personally, I love to pair Ajuga plants with Coralbells, Fothergilla, and Bleeding Heart plants. The pairings look absolutely stunning!
