Keeping a Christmas tree alive and well during the holiday season is, well, extremely difficult. Things don’t look super festive when your Christmas tree is dying and has needles falling everywhere…If you’re bound and determined to keep your tree looking (and smelling) fantastic until New Years, I think this tutorial may do you extremely well!
First things first, do your research! What kinds of evergreens do best in your area of the country? A good rule of thumb is to pick out a variety that can survive in an environment two grow zones colder than your own.
Did you know that your tree needs time to transition from outdoors to inside? A few weeks before you plan on decorating, store your Christmas tree in the garage so it slowly grows used to the change in temperature. Make sure to keep it watered while it’s hanging out in there!
While holiday lights aren’t known to cause excessive plant damage, if they get hot enough they can burn the needles of the tree. It’s better to use Christmas light strands that have small, tiny, bulbs. These do best on trees!
Naturally, every Christmas tree needs a healthy supply of fresh water! As soon as possible after picking it up, put your tree in water. Seriously. Like right when you get home. The tree will absorb as much as a quart of water per day, so make sure you are regularly checking in to make sure there’s enough water in your tree base. Make sure that the trunk of the tree never dries out, or so will the rest of the tree.
