Believe it or not, those coffee grounds you thought were useless actually serve a handful of purposes in your gardens. So don’t put them in the garbage, put them in your garden and see some great things happen! (You can always freeze the grounds to prevent mold.) Here are six ways to use coffee grounds.

Compost

The most common use for coffee grounds is probably in a compost pile. The grounds, surprisingly, still have enough material in them to make for great compost items. Sprinkle them around the pile and you’ll see better results in no time!

Mulch

Coffee grounds are great mulch because they help retain water in the soil and keep the temperature even. Spread enough of the grounds around the base of the plants to keep them insulated well, but you don’t want to spread it too thick or it can damage the roots.

Fertilizer

There is actually a lot of nitrogen in coffee grounds, enough to make them a useful fertilizer.. Figure out what your plants need and how much of it, and if nitrogen deficiency is an issue than you won’t even need to buy expensive fertilizer!

Slug Repellent

Slugs supposedly hate crawling across coffee grounds because the course material cuts up their underbellies. Whether that’s the reason or not, slugs and snails seem to avoid coffee grounds when possible. Spread the grounds around your plants and watch the slugs vanish!

Vermicomposting

It may be gross, but coffee grounds are a great material to mix in to help vermicomposting. Worms love the nitrogen-rich grounds so it will help spawn and attract more of them, which helps your garden!

Clean Garden Tools

While this may not be directly in your garden, clean garden tools definitely help the gardening process! Because coffee grounds are abrasive, they can be great at getting rid of hard stuck-on dirt and grime. Just rub the grounds on your tools and then wash them off!
