Looking for somewhere to buy plants cheap? Buy plants online instead! It should be mentioned that I’m not telling you to stay far away from your local nurseries…in fact that couldn’t be further from the truth! Instead, I’m telling you never to purchase your plants from a big box store (like Home Depot or Lowe’s) ever again. After this, you’ll be saving big bucks and getting even MORE beautiful plants. Here’s where I buy plants cheap!
Although the cost of plants at Home Depot and Lowe’s can be significantly lower than purchasing from a local nursery…the quality of the plants is almost always worse. Not only that, but typically, the plants found at these Big Box stores often come in less varieties. If you are looking for a unique variety of a Peony or a Columbine, you aren’t likely to find it at a Big Box store. Try places like Garden Hills Nursery (and online shop!) or your local nursery.
Typically, stores like Home Depot source their plants from out of country, in a typical greenhouse. Because the plants are grown in an unspecific greenhouse, they aren’t adapted to changes in weather or water. You may find that your store bought plants don’t last past the first cold or drought snap. Plants grown in your area (even in a greenhouse!) are often more adapted to the changes in the weather in your area. If a plant is doing well in a local nursery, it will DEFINITELY do well in your landscaping.
It may seem counterintuitive to purchase your plants from an online nursery, but I’ve had nothing but success with plants purchased from Garden Hills Nursery. I love it because they only take a certain number of orders throughout the growing seasons, so you know your plant is well cared for and nurtured. Most plants are shipped dormant so they do best in your specific grow environment. Because they are shipped dormant, they are significantly lighter (and therefore) cheaper to ship! “Bare root” plants like those from Garden Hills Nursery have larger “root balls” and don’t get shell shock when transferred to a new soil.
