I love to force bulbs indoors, because doesn’t everyone get a little sad come January? The winter blues are totally a real thing, and I definitely suffer from them! I miss my garden! Every year, around the second week in January, I like to force bulbs indoors! It provides my entryway (and kitchen!) with a much needed infusion of spring, but in the middle of winter! Here’s how I do it:
When forcing bulbs indoors, many of them will “need a reminder” that they went through the winter season. You can mimick this by freezing your bulbs in your freezer through the winter months. Depending on when you want your bulbs to bloom, you should freeze them according to this chart:
Freeze In September- Bloom in January
Freeze In October- Bloom in February
Freeze in November- Bloom In March
Depending on when you need a winter pick-me-up is when you will need to freeze your bulbs. When freezing your bulbs: place them in a container with soil. It’s best to mimic natures REAL freeze!
When you are ready to “wake up” your bulbs, move them to a warmer area (like the fridge) for a couple of weeks.
When moving from the freezer, place your bulbs in the fridge for a few days. Next, move your bulbs into an area of indirect sunlight. This will feel like the very first few weeks of spring to them!
After the fridge, place your bulbs in an area of sunlight. You will begin to notice that you bulbs start to bloom now! Once the bloom has reached the surface, you can place your bulbs in an area of full sunlight!
In only a week you will begin to see big blooms and blossoms! Isn’t Spring in January fantastic?
