Figuring out which varieties of hostas grow well in the shade can be difficult for gardeners of any level. Not enough sunlight is a sure fire way to kill your favorite plants! Instead of taking the gamble when growing plants in the shade, here are 10 varieties of hostas perfect for a hosta shade garden.
1.Golden Sculpture
While this plant loves the shade, it’s known to be pretty tolerant of extreme sunlight, as well. During the summer, this hosta will produce white flowers on tall stems.
2. Night Before Christmas
‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the garden…the gardener realized how perfect this hosta was for areas of shade. These can grow to be 18inches tall, and in clumps that can get up to 30 inches wide. Look out for flowers in the warmer months.
3. Gingee
This hosta is one of the “skinnier” varieties, but can actually grow to be more than a foot tall! Purple flowers will appear on the hosta as it matures in the Summer months.
4. Halcyon
Keep this lush hosta out of the sun and safely tucked away in a nice and shady area. This hosta is know for it’s tolerance to slugs, as well!
5. Francee
Known for it’s distinctive markings on dark green leaves, Francee is a shade loving hosta that may put out a sprig or two of lavender flowers!
6. Vulcan
Similar to the Nightmare Before Christmas, Vulcans have a distinct pattern down the middle. You WILL need to divide these hostas every five years to maintain the proper growth cycle.
7.Golden Tiara
Any gardening queen needs this in her landscaping plans! This plant loves the shade, but the outer colorings on the plant leaves can turn a golden color when hit with direct sunlight. Golden Tiara hostas stay relatively small, and often only grow to be about 24 inches wide.

9. Guacamole
Holy, guacamole! Those plant leaves are seriously huge! This shade-loving Hosta gets it’s name because it’s the exact same color as, you guessed it, guacamole!
10. August Moon
If exposed to to much sunlight, the leaves of this hosta are known to turn a golden brown. Keep it in a shady area if you love the way the lush green foliage looks. These can get up to three feet tall!
