Put all your food scraps and organic waste to good use by building a compost bin. This lets you make your own compost so that your garden, yard, and flowerbeds can all get the nutrition they need without spending lots of money on store-bought compost. Here are just a few easy and effective compost bin projects you can try.
Wood and mesh
You can combine wood and mesh to get a super simple compost bin. The wood acts as the frame while the mesh holds everything in place. This cuts down on your costs because mesh is a lot cheaper than wood!
Wood
If you want to spend a bit more money but get a sturdier compost bin, then this is your project. Make a compost bin completely out of wood (whichever kind you want) and it will secure all the compost that’s inside.
Pallets
You don’t even have to go out and buy wood, actually, if you don’t want. Just make a compost bin out of recycled garden pallets. They work great for the sides of the bin and don’t take much work to combine together.
Garbage can
If you don’t want to spend time constructing a compost bin, then just turn an old garbage can into one. Simple drill holes in the side for air to get in, and then start using it right away! You can even build a contraption to wheel it around the yard and garden!
Chicken wire
Another simple compost project is a roll of chicken wire. Stick it in the ground and wrap it around to create a compost bin whatever size you want. Make sure the sides are secured (so the pressure of the compost doesn’t break it) and you’re good to start using it.
Greenhouse
A great addition to a compost bin is some sort of feature that lets it act like a greenhouse. This makes your compost break down faster and better. Usually some sort of clear top or lid will help trap the gases in.
Concrete blocks
For a more permanent compost bin, make one out of concrete blocks. The best part about this is that you won’t have to worry about pets and animals pawing around the compost since they won’t be able to get in at all!
