Container gardening tulips isn’t difficult at all! With the right container, and the right grow environment, you can start container gadening tulips in no time at all!
Purchase tulip bulbs and high quality potting soil mix. It’s a good idea to buy tulip bulbs in the fall for best results, no less than 6 weeks before the first frost.
Pick a container that is tall and full to plant the tulip bulbs in. Containers that mimick the growth of the tulips (long and skinny) usually work best. Use a large, bright colored pot!
Plant your tulips from September to October. Plant numerous bulbs depending on the size of the pot for best chance at flourishing flowers.
Put the tulips outdoors in a cool, shady spot. Keep pots watered especially during the first few weeks to avoid stunted and shriveled flowers.
Fertilize the tulips after they begin to flower. After flowering, remove any dead flowers and allow the leaves to die and fall off the plant.
Plant 4 tulips in a 6-inch pot and up to 15 bulbs in a 25-inch pot. Make sure there’s about one-half inch of soil below the bulb and about an inch of soil covering the top of the bulb. Following these planting tips will help your tulips grow fully.
Regularly water your tulips! Pots don’t retain water as well as ground soil would. There you have it! Isn’t it easy to start container gardening tulips?

Hi Jenny, if I plant tulips in containers what do I do with my containers during the winter so they don’t crack from being left outside? In the past, when I left my containers outside they cracked from the cold temperatures. Should I plant the tulips in containers in late February so I have a better chance of the container not cracking outside?
Thank you,
Melissa
