- If you’re a first time gardening, then don’t start with the most complicated and difficult vegetables and fruits. Start small, growing things that are easy and quick, so you remain excited about gardening!
- Know your zone and the climate that you live in. Ask around or look up the information online so you can know what the best kind of plants to grow are.
- Trade seeds with neighbors and other gardeners. This is especially important if you want to expand your garden without spending a lot of money!
- Keep a little portable tool kit you can use to carry around in the garden. It’ll be super handy and allows you to quickly get whatever tool you need without wasting time.
- Turn your kitchen scraps into compost! Simply take all the natural materials (like vegetable skins), and put them in a compost to get some great nutrition for your garden for free.
- If you’re growing tomatoes and they seem to be a little on the sour side, then use baking soda. Simply sprinkle it in the soil of the tomato plant and they should get sweeter.
- You can also use baking soda to deter certain pest from your garden. Just sprinkle it around the garden and repeat as necessary.
- Make sure that you’re pulling weeds out weekly, if not more. You don’t want to go out to the garden and spend the whole afternoon weeding, it’s disheartening and also exhausting.
- Use toilet paper as makeshift seed tape. Just stick the seed to the toilet paper and then, instead of planting each seed individually, just unroll the toilet paper and it’s done!
- Don’t be afraid to talk to your local nursery if you have questions or suggestions. They’re always really friendly and eager to help a fellow green thumb out!
- If you can, grow an herb garden right outside your kitchen window in a planter box. That way, when you’re cooking and need an herb, you can just open the window and grab what you need!
- When plotting out your garden, make sure that the soil drains properly. There’s nothing worse than setting up a garden just to realize that, the first day of rain, it’s useless. Make a raised garden bed if necessary.
- It’s always a good idea to test the PH level of your soil before you start planting. That way, just in case, you can make sure your plants have the best soil to get started.
- Get your family and friends involved with the garden! The more people you have, the more you’ll actual garden, the better your garden will be!
- Rotate what you grow so that the soil never gets too depleted. You’ll have to do some research according to what you like and what you want to grow.
- I love using garden pallets, and they’re super helpful in organizing your tools. You can use each row for your small hand tools like the spade, watering can, etc.
- You can also use PVC pipe to organize your bigger tools like a shovel, rake, hoe, etc. Simply cut the pieces of PVC pipe to hold your tools and keep them in place.
- I really like having a potting table because it makes things a lot easier and I don’t have to do a lot of the gardening work on my hands and knees. Plus, I just think the potting table is cute!
- Be creative and use pieces of stone to label the food that you’re growing. Stick them at the end of each row so you can keep track!
- Similarly, you can also use broken pieces of plates and other ceramics to mark your vegetables! Simply write on them and then put the labels in the soil.
- When you’ve finished cooking or boiling vegetables, don’t throw the water out. Instead, use it to water your plants. Your garden will love the extra nutrients in the vegetable water!
- Use a lemon rind to start seedlings. You just have to stick the seeds in the lemon rind and take care of it until the seedling starts to sprout.
